1739, May 17. "Copy of the Courses of the Shannondale Tract Land Part in Loudoun & Part in Berkeley Cty deed made to John
Colvil by Lord Fairfax the 17th day of May 1739 " recorded in the Proprietor's Office Book E, p. 22. recorded in the Proprietor's
Office Book E, p. 22. The Plat is recorded in p. 42 & 43 " Containing 29170 acres." [Partly legible addition: "and 20 cont acres
30285?] [Note: This copy must have been made between 1772 and 1801, when Jefferson County was part of Berkeley. The land
would have been on Orange County in 1739.]
Beginning at a Spanish Oak & Locust Tree marked W. Fx [1] standing on Potomac River side and under the East Side of the Blue
Ridge opposite to the Falls of the said Potomac River called Shanandoah falls and about half a mile below the mouth of the
Shanandoah, the Spanish oak the Beginning tree to a tract of 2340 acres of land surveyed by Mr. George Atwood from thence with a
line of the said Atwoods lands South 13 degrees East twelve hundred and twenty two poles to B [2] three black oaks near a branch and
corner to the sd. Atwood, and to another tract of lands containing 17296 acres from thence with a line of the sd. lands South 1 degree
East two hundred and five poles to a black oak [3] on the Short Hill side and a corner to a tract of land surveyed for John Mills now
Capt. Catesby Cook's from thence South 15 degrees West eight hundred and twenty four poles to four maples [4] near a small branch
of Kitechton under the foot of the short Hill [illegible] of said Cooks from thence South five poles to E three poplars [5] [illegible] of a
tract of 4000 acres surveyed for Capt. Awbrey [?] now Colo. Taylors [Tayloes?], from thence running with the said Taylors lines
fifteen courses as follows North 53 degrees West forty two poles to a [illegible] oak [6] at the end of a ledge of white rocks of stones,
thence South 72 degrees West eighty [illegible] poles to a white oak [7] on the side of the said hill, thence South 4 degrees West two
hundred and forty poles to a small Spanish oak [8] thence South 36 degrees West five hundred poles crossing the north branch on
Fork of Kitochtok Creek [9] and cornered at a small white oak about eight poles on the South side of the sd. fork, thence South 26
degrees West ninety six poles to a chestnut oak [10] on the side of the said hill thence South two hundred poles [11] thence South 55
degrees West eighty poles to a small red oak [12] thence South 32 degrees West eighty eight poles to a small hiccory sapling [13],
thence South 15 degrees West 40 poles to a small hiccory [14] thence South 16 degrees East seventy four poles to a red oak [15] on
the side of a branch, thence up the said Branch South 60 degrees West four poles [16] thence South 80 degrees West ninety four poles
to a red oak sapling [17] in a valley at the foot of the said hill, thence North 50 degrees West one hundred and sixty poles to five oaks
[18] on the north side of a glade thence South 60 degrees West thirty two poles to a white oak [19] on the side of a branch of the sd.
fork of the Sd. Creek and near a lick, thence down the said branch and binding therewith South 20 degrees West one hundred and
sixty poles to F [20] six white oaks on a branch side and the last of the aforesaid fifteen courses thence South 18 degrees West two
hundred and forty eight poles to G [21] a Spanish and white oak marked WF and HW and the beginning of the tract of land of Capt.
Samuel Johnstons from whence his courses North 33 degrees West four hundred and five poles to a red oak [22] standing on a small
branch near a miles [?] above the end of the sd. Short Hill, thence North 68 degrees West one hundred and fifty seven poles to H [23]
the end of the second courses of the sd. Johnston, thence South 79 degrees 30 minutes West one thousand and sixty eight poles
crossing the blue Ridge between Williams and Georges Gap to F [24] a large marked white oak at the foot of a piney mountain and
being a corner of a tract of land of Colo. Mann Page deceased from thence with the said Pages line North 16 degrees East two

thousand and seventy seven poles to K [25] where the said courses strikes Shannondoah River and on the South East side of the same,
and opposite to a large bottom of low rich lands called Vestals Upper Bottom, from thence down the said Shannandoah River and

[70], thence South 43 degrees East fourteen poles to the Beginning: The content within the bounds of the said survey is thus [?] three
thousand three hundred and fifty three acres but then there is included three tracks of Capt. Cooks, one for seventeen hundred and
sixty two acres, one other for eight hundred and sixty six acres, another for five hundred and forty acres, likewise a tract surveyed for
Morgan Bryan of one thousand and fifteen acres, but granted by deed to William Fairfax Esqr. So that the remainder now surveyed is
neet twenty nine thousand one hundred and seventy acres. Together with all Rights members and appurtenances thereunto belonging
Royall mines excepted and a full third part of Lead, Copper, Tin, Coals, Iron Mines, and Iron Ore, that shall be found thereon, to have
and to hold the said twenty nine thousand one hundred and twenty acres called by the name of Shannondale.
